This weekend is Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. Swimming Pools open. Parades take place. People barbecue. Oh yeah, and there are summer sales.

Memorial Day weekend is the biggest sales event time of year until November’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Last year, retailers for clothes, appliances and cars offered significant discounts and it looks to be the case this year too.

Tying holidays to your marketing campaigns—especially a big holiday weekend like Memorial Day is a reliable, formulaic and effective way to stand out in a crowded marketplace and stimulate consumers to take action.

As a small business marketer, you can use holidays to keep your marketing interesting, boost your response, and even create better relationship with your clients, customers and patients. Here’s how:

1)      Enter the conversation already going on. What are people talking about around the water cooler this week? They are talking about their plans for the holiday weekend. When you use holidays as part of your marketing campaign, you use one of the most famous copywriting principles from Robert Collier of entering the conversation ALREADY currently occurring in your prospects’ or customers’ minds.

Grab your calendar and look for the holidays you know your customers will be talking about—then plan promotions around them.

2)      Create or strengthen your bond with your customers. When you have something in common with your customers, certain holidays can help nurture a stronger relationship with your prospects and customers.

Are you particularly patriotic or do you have a tie with the military you want your customers to know about? Choose holidays that will reflect that—such as Veteran’s Day, Independence Day and National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

Or have you noticed an affinity to Star Trek and a lot of Star Trek fans in your target market? You might try a promotion around “Captain Picard Day” or “First Contact Day” (a holiday celebrated to honor the flight of the Phoenix and First Contact with the Vulcans on April 5, 2063.)

Causes are another connection and there are holidays built around these as well. For example, May is ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) Awareness Month and Brain Tumor Awareness Month.

The idea here is to pick a holiday topic, even if it’s unknown, that will spark their interest because it’s a topic or cause they are interested in. There are holidays for almost anything you can think of, so the more you know about your customers, the more you can find holidays that will match their interests.

3)      Keep them interested. You’ve heard it said many times that people want to be entertained. Holidays can keep people interested and entertained.

One way to keep people entertained is to pick official (not made up) unknown holidays that are silly, bizarre, strange, or wacky such as International Audit Month, No Pants Day, National Dog Bite Prevention Week, or Lumpy Rug Day.

4)      Increase your revenue. It stands to reason if you can get more people to pay attention to, open and read your marketing, you’ll have more people come through your door, order your products, use your services and/or respond to your offer.

Is your product the best that it can be?

My grandfather passed away a couple of years ago. He was a carpenter and always worked on other people’s homes. He fixed them up and installed siding and roofs. I worked with him a lot when I was a kid growing up.

My grandfather was one of those people who had his own home, but would just kind of do things halfway on it to get by. He fixed everyone else’s house, but at his own house, he would only do what he absolutely had to do.

For example, my dad asked him to come over because we needed some steps on the front of our house. He came over and built us some temporary steps. He explained that they were good enough for now. Those steps were installed when I was probably five or six years old, and they were there until the day I left home when I was 18. I guess that was “good enough for now.”

The point I’m trying to make here is that a lot of people are like that with their own products… “that’s good enough for now.” “Just put it up. I can fix it later,” but later never comes.

Therefore, they’re putting up a half-ass product that really isn’t good. There are three things you should ask yourself about your products.

1. Is your product the best you can possibly create?

Think of the product you have — how can you make it better? Not for you, but for the consumer using the product. How can you make that product better?

The ideal customer service situation is you should have no customer service. You know that’s not going to happen, but that’s the idea and the objective. If you have a great product, you will eliminate a lot of your customer service.

2. What makes your product unique?

What is it about your product that’s different than every other product on the market? What makes you different than all of your competitors?

Sometimes, when you really think about it, there’s absolutely no difference whatsoever between your product and your competitor’s, except maybe that you have a different look and feel on your website.

You may say the information a little differently, but that’s not enough; you have to have something that the other guy doesn’t. You have to give the customer a unique product in order to make it stand out from the rest of the crap people offer in the marketplace.

3. Will your product change with the times?

Will you have to modify the product in the future? Did you create that product just because of a trend that’s happening in the marketplace, or did you create a product that is evergreen, one that never has to change?

That’s the ideal type of product, a product that never has to change.

For example, a weight loss product, for the most part, doesn’t really have to change, unless what you’re teaching people is blatantly wrong or could possibly hurt a person.

If you create evergreen products, you don’t have to keep going back and redoing your product because of changes that occur in the marketplace. Constantly having to update your products is a pain in the butt.

Do it right the first time, so that you never have to worry about fixing it later, and never settle for your products being “good enough for now.” Create the best products you can, make them unique and evergreen. Creating products that fit these criteria is the first step to long-term success in your business.

I get approached by a lot of different people who all have questions about making money online. They generally ask questions like: “What’s the latest and greatest?” “What’s the new information out there?” And, “What’s changed?”

I always tell them what’s on my mind at the time and then try to answer their questions. One of the things I’ve been thinking about lately is the answer really isn’t about what’s new. It’s kind of about what’s old.

It’s “what aren’t you doing right” to begin with.

I market products and services on the Internet quite frequently. I’ve made millions of dollars doing it, but there’s honestly only three ways to really make more money on the Internet.

1. Get more traffic to your website.

If you have a website right now, one way to increase the amount of income you earn is to get more traffic coming to that website. If you get more traffic, no matter what your conversion, you’re going to get more people to buy. That’s easy enough to understand.

2. Increase your conversion.

Increasing conversions means you need to get more people to buy.

For example, if you had 100 people coming to your website, and you had 2% conversion, which means two out of 100 would buy, then you’d have a 2% conversion. For most people, that’s a good number, but what if you had five people buy? Then you’d have a 5% conversion. You could make one tweak on your website, get more people to buy and instantly make more money.

Those are the two primary things that people focus in on.

1) Ways to get more traffic to your website

2) Ways to get more people to buy

They are usually tricks like pop ups, popovers, ways to interrupt people when they’re on your site in order to get them to pay attention to your marketing messages.

I have to tell you, there are some amazing tools out there that will help you do this, but sometimes I run across a site that has every single one of these tools on it at the same time. How ridiculous is that? In this case, you’re just pissing off the customer or the prospect when they come to your website. You don’t want to do that.

The third way though, I think, is a way most people don’t even think about. In fact, It’s what I call the mystery element.

3. Have a great product.

It seems strange that I would say the mystery element is to have a great product, but it’s true.

Most people don’t really think about how great their product is. You see, we can put all these tricks in place, we can get more traffic, we can figure out ways to use all kinds of tactics to get more people to buy from us, but at the end of the day it’s still the same product. If the product is crap, people are not going to buy and if they do, you’re going to get refunds.

I was thinking about this the other day. You can spray air freshener on dog crap, but at the end of the day it’s still dog crap. So, what you need to do is increase the value of your product.

Ultimately, if you want to make more money from your website, you have to do ALL three things. You have to increase traffic. You have to increase your conversions. And you absolutely have to have a great product.

While Samsung has long had products scattered throughout Best Buy stores, they are paying Best Buy to put their products in the spotlight.

Samsung says that it will open 1,400 “mini-stores” inside of Best Buy stores by the end of June.

Called a “Samsung Experience Shop,” the mini-store will have an entire section devoted to Samsung products such as the smartphones, tablets, cameras, laptops, etc. and will include customer support for Samsung products similar to the “Genius Bar” at Apple stores.

1,400 mini-stores opening within just a couple of months. That is some massive action. And just the first step in Best Buy’s new “mini-store concept” which it plans to expand to more brands and products. The goal is to encourage more store visitors and a higher percentage of them to whip out their wallets and buy.

Moreover, it’s an attempt to move more traffic to their stores and away from online competition.  The basic strategy is to dedicate more space to higher-margin products and eliminate things that don’t sell. As for Samsung, this was a quicker and relatively less expensive way to broaden their retail footprint and move towards providing their consumers what they want which is better customer service.

There are two important strategies at work here. One is the massive action they are taking. The second is something many miss—and that is to focus on the things that will produce the most value.

It’s not uncommon to see big companies roll out a huge, massive campaign like this.

But as an entrepreneur and small business owner, massive action surrounding focused efforts like this – often go undone, even though it’s these types of efforts that can create considerable growth and huge profit. Especially when, like Samsung and Best Buy, it’s focused on things that will increase your business and profits the most.

The past two years, the GKIC Marketer of the Year at SuperConference, won because they took massive action in a rapid focused effort; creating and executing multiple campaigns and taking advantage of multiple opportunities all at once.

For example, this year’s Marketer of the Year winner, Jimmy Nicholas implemented 20+ direct mail campaigns, and in one year’s time, transformed his business and life.  Jimmy took his business, which had lost money for three consecutive years, to a 600% increase in profits.

It’s not just the Marketer of the Year that you’ll see this behavior—and results. If you talk to the most successful business owners, it is this concept of taking massive action that many credit for doubling their incomes (or more) and providing breakthrough business moments.

For those who don’t take this step, the common excuses are that they can’t afford the time or designate the resources to do something like this. Or they are a business of one and “wear all of the hats” and they have their priorities cast in stone.

Virtually every business owner has at least one time when, for whatever reason, they are cash strapped and feel resourceless. And if not money strapped, they are “time strapped” and can’t figure out how to put more hours in the day to get everything done.

The fact is, there is always something you can do. Let me say that again. There is ALWAYS a way to get things done.

Of course, you don’t want to be foolish about spending your time or your resources…because let’s face it, unlike the big, dumb companies, you can’t afford to waste either.

So the first thing you need to do is figure out exactly what you want and where you want to go.

When I meet with clients privately, I discuss the “picture” of their business and life as they want it to be…a few years, five years, sometimes ten years into the future.

One of the things I learned from “Psycho-Cybernetics” is that the human mind needs the destination to navigate and move toward.  The clearer the destination, the better and faster the progress.

You CAN make a lot of headway at a rapid pace in life, but still not be moving toward a destination you want. I know. I’ve done that more than once. So the first thing to do to get your business moving in the right direction is to give careful, serious thought about where you want to go, what you want your business and life to be like.

Once you have that in place, get resourceful and put a plan in place to take massive action in a clear, focused effort on what will produce the highest possible results.

In my book “The Ultimate Marketing Plan” I tell a story of a young chiropractor who was getting ready to open his new practice—with at least a dozen competing chiropractors surrounding his office that were already established. He spent a full month prior to opening his office going door to door.

He knocked on 2000 doors and introduced himself, asking the residents about the area and their health interests and making friends. From the first day he opened his doors and started seeing patients, his practice prospered. In fact, in his first year, it outperformed all the established practices in the area.

Best Buy’s new CEO Hubert Joly could have whined and complained and made a lot of excuses about the mess he inherited.  He could have continued to do business as usual and watched Best Buy continue down a losing path. But instead he was resourceful.  Looking at what Best Buy had and what it was lacking, he came up with an innovative and massive campaign  that could provide a huge win for not only Best Buy, but for its vendors and customers as well.

It is inexcusable to be without resourcefulness. This is about character, not cash, nor time.

There are millionaires, multi-millionaires and billionaires that started with nothing. And everyone has the same 24 hours in a day.

Action–Defined

One of the most important discoveries in 20th century thought has been the central role of the actions that you take.  An action is defined as something with a consequence.  Using this definition, even an inaction can be considered to be an action, because inaction, or a failure to act on your part, has a consequence that can dramatically impact your life.

For example, a person who fails to finish school, or fails to read regularly, or to listen to audio tapes and take additional training, is committing to what you might call an “inaction.”  But because it has devastating consequences on the future for that person, it can be considered an action as well.

The most important actions that you take in determining the quality of your life revolve around the virtues and values that you decide to embrace and live by.  They are as important to your life as breathing in and breathing out.  The fact is that everything that you do is largely determined by what you feel to be good and right and true about life and people-your values!

When you are living consistent with your values, you feel good about yourself.  When you are living inconsistent with your values, you feel badly about yourself.

Be Happy and Feel Good

Aristotle, perhaps the greatest of all the philosophers, broke new ground in thinking when he determined that all of human action is aimed at achieving the happiness of the individual.  He said that we are all the same in this one respect.  We all seek happiness, however we define it.  Everything you do is merely a step in the direction of achieving the ultimate happiness you seek. Aristotle did not stop there.  He went on to point out that only the good can be happy, and only the virtuous can be good.  Therefore, all happiness is determined by the ability of the individual to establish and live by values and virtues that are life enhancing.

From the earliest days of civilization, the purpose of an education was to instill values into the character of the young.  For the first 200 years of American historical development, it was understood that the purpose of the schools was to teach values and the purpose of the home was to teach religion.  Young people were instructed by reading the stories, poems and plays of men and women in previous time periods who most demonstrated and illustrated the values by which that person should live if a person wanted to have a happy life.

Aristotle went on to point out that, if you have been brought up without clear values, you can develop values by deciding upon the kind of person you want to be and then by acting as if you had the values that that person would have.

Sculpt Your Life and Your Future

The wonderful thing about being a human being is that you are free to shape and sculpt your own character.  You can make new choices and decisions at any time of life, especially with regard to your values, and begin acting as if you had those values already.

Perhaps the measure essence of happiness is your ability to achieve the three common goals of self-respect, self-esteem and personal pride that everyone wants.  It is only when you have these three in sufficient quantities that you feel really good about yourself.

Ok, just started using Google+. I have to say I’m extremely impressed with what I’ve seen so far. It’s fast which is a lot more than I can say about FaceBook. One of the key points for me though is that it is very intuitive. Sure I had a few things that I didn’t know immediately but I figured them out in a matter of minutes.

How does this compare to Google Buzz? Buzz is pretty much irrelevant now. Google+ makes it totally obsolete. Do I think this is a FaceBook killer? Probably, not, but is it an alternative option? Definitely YES! It seems so much more streamlined and certainly well thought out. I have to say, from what I’ve seen so far, I really like it.

When we talk about “selling people on your ideas”, many people feel a little uneasy.  They think to themselves that this cannot really apply to them because they are not really in sales.  But this is silly.

You see, everyone is in sales.  Everyone sells something to someone under some conditions.  From the time you are an infant and you begin selling your parents on the idea of changing your diapers or, getting you a bottle or rocking you to sleep, you are in sales.  Your buying power as a child are your smiles and sweetness on the one hand, and your crying and screams of annoyance on the other.  And in either case, you are attempting to make a sale of some kind.

What is Sales?

A good definition of selling might help.  Selling is the ability to influence others to cooperate with you to achieve your goals.  You only have two choices.  You can get key people to cooperate with you or you can simply cooperate with them.  You can be an agent of influence or you can be a recipient of influence.  You can be good at the business of influencing and persuading others people or you can be poor at it.  But in any case, you are in sales.

Fortunately, the basic principles of sales have been known for several thousands of years. A market transaction, from the earliest times, has been defined as a transaction where both parties feel that they gain by trading with the other.  Otherwise, if the market is free and open, one or both parties would not enter into the transaction.

When you go out into the marketplace to sell a product or service today, the case that you must make, is that your product or service will be of greater value or enjoyment to the customer than the money that the customer will have to acquire it.  Your product or service must also offer a greater benefit or value to the customer than an alternative use of the money.  This is where sales is absolutely essential to all transactions.

There are two major areas of your life where your ability to sell people on your ideas will determine your ultimate success or failure.  The first is when you work for a company.  The second is when you start your own business and become an entrepreneur.  I’ll talk about the selling skills you need in both cases, but let’s start with selling your ideas at your place of work.

What is the purpose of a business?  Many people would say that it is to make a profit.  However, the profit is merely the result of operating a business efficiently.  The real purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer.  Therefore, whenever you have an idea that can help your business to create and keep a business, or to operate more efficiently, you have a product idea that you need to sell.

Good Sales People Answer the Right Questions

The number one question in sales, asked by every customer is, “What’s in it for me?”  We say that every customer is tuned into his or her own favorite radio station “WII-FM,”  What’s in it for me?

People buy for their reasons, not your reasons.  Tony Alessandra’s Platinum Rule says that you must do unto others as they wish to be done unto, not as you wish to be done unto.  In sales, this simply means that you must sell unto others in terms of what they want and need, before you start talking about what you want and need.  The failure to understand this simple point is the reason why most sales people either underachieve or fail in the field of selling.  They are so caught up in what they are selling that they forget to take the necessary time to find out what it is that the person they are talking to might be buying.

The two major motivators of human action have always been the desire for gain and the fear of loss.  People buy a product, service or an idea based on their anticipation that they will be better off by following your recommendation than they would be if they did nothing at all.  People may also fear that they will lose substantially more than what you are selling will cost them to preserve their current situation.

In every case, you are selling an opportunity to achieve, avoid or preserve something,  If you are selling an investment account or idea, you are selling the customers hope that he or she will be better off and even financially independent in the future.  If you are selling life insurance you are appealing to the fear that his family or business will be left destitute or ruined should an accident occur.  In either case, you are appealing to the desire for gain or the fear of loss.

Influencing Key People and Increasing Buying Power

The bottom line of successful selling, which I have studied and practiced for thirty years, is that customers want to know what your ideas will do for them rather than what it is.  Experienced sales people, of all kinds, talk in terms of how their idea will benefit the customer in his or her current situation.  Inexperienced sales people talk about the features and the characteristics of their product or service, as if these had some kind of motive power.

I love research. It’s one of my favorite past times on the Internet and I do it just about every day in one form or another.

Researching competitors and other industries out there is something you should be doing on a regular basis to see exactly how they work and if you can get any ideas for your business.

In fact, many of the tactics you see that are being used in whatever market is typically borrowed from another market. We borrow all the time. At one point a few years back I was called the most honest thief in the industry because I would steal ideas from all kinds of industries, but I always shared where I found it.

Recently, I happened to be on a website, and I was looking at the product. It sounded good so I wanted to see what their price points were. Here is what I noticed, and it was a very interesting strategy.

The first thing was that you could join this particular site for $ 99 a month. I thought that was fairly reasonable, but beneath that it said “or buy one full year for only $ 497.” I stopped for a moment and read it again.

Let me ask you a question. Which one do you think they were really trying to promote? If you said the $ 497, then I would say you were right.

Now, I don’t know this company, but let’s break it down and check it out. At $ 99 a month, that’s approximately $ 1,200 a year or, you could pay a one time cost for the year of just $ 497, which saves you about $ 700. So, you would be a fool to take the $ 99 a month option.

They are using a tactic I call the value gap, which means there’s a distance between what you want people to take or to actually purchase versus a decoy.

The decoy is set out just to show value and without the decoy, the value would just be $ 497. Here’s why — $ 497 by itself may or may not be attractive, but when you compare it to paying $ 1,200 a year, $ 497 instantly becomes very attractive.

You have to be careful as far as the structure on this. If you didn’t have $ 497, then the $ 99 would sound attractive, because it’s affordable and if you don’t have the extra $ 400 on top of that, it may be your better option, but again, over the course of a year, you’re paying $ 1,200.

The point about this particular strategy is that it only works if you have the decoy. So, there are two distinct strategies.

Think about how you could do this for your business and how you could implement this strategy as well into a membership site.

Think of how you could implement this into one of your products. You could even twist it to make it work for a service business. It’s quite a brilliant strategy and I have to applaud them for implementing it. It’s something I will have to try out on something in the future. If it works, I’ll give you an update on it in a future article.

Just keep it in mind that there are different ways to present your information to people and to make it so they actually want to buy it. You see, I believe that any information can be made more attractive from a prospect’s point of view.

This new tactic was found simply by researching what is out there and what is being used and working in other industries. Drop me a line with your results if you try this tactic out.
